How we work this out
We use eBay's own rules and round each fee to the nearest penny, as eBay's own examples do. Where eBay leaves a question open, this is what we do:
- Buyer Protection fee: Buyers outside the UK may pay local tax instead of UK VAT, so their fee can differ.
- Per-order fee (business): eBay does not say whether postage counts towards the £10 limit. We include postage, as eBay does for its 10p fee.
- Reduced 10p per-order fee (business): Based on eBay's 2022 list of eligible categories.
- International fee (business): We add 20% VAT to this fee, as eBay lists business fees without VAT.
- Shop subscription, monthly (business): eBay lists only monthly Shop prices on its fee page; annual prices are not shown.
- Promoted Listings General ad fee: For private sellers we charge the ad rate on the item and postage, not the Buyer Protection fee, and treat it as including VAT.
- Seller currency conversion charge: We do not add VAT to the conversion charge.
- VAT on fees: We add VAT once to your total fees. eBay's invoice may differ by 1p.
- Men's Shoes > Trainers: We apply 7% to the whole sale, including postage, once the item price is £100 or more.
Payout and refunds
eBay pays you the item price and the postage the buyer paid, less your fees. As a private seller you receive the full item price: the Buyer Protection fee is paid by the buyer, on top.
If you refund a buyer, eBay gives back the Buyer Protection fee too: all of it on a full refund, the same share on a partial refund.
Which of your own seller fees eBay credits after a refund depends on the reason. eBay explains this on its Fee credits page.
Questions about eBay fees
How much are eBay fees in the UK?
Private sellers based in the UK pay a final value fee of 0%, so selling is free; the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee instead. Business sellers pay a final value fee of 5% to 14.9% of the total sale, depending on the category (12.9% for most items), plus a per-order fee of £0.30 on orders of £10.00 or less or £0.40 above, a regulatory operating fee of 0.35%, and 20% VAT on top of those fees.
How much is eBay's seller fee?
For private sellers it is 0%. For business sellers it depends on the category: from 5% to 14.9% of the total sale, plus the per-order fee. The rate table on this page lists every category.
Who pays the Buyer Protection fee on eBay?
The buyer. eBay adds it to items from UK-based private sellers: £0.10 per item plus 7% of the part up to £20.00, 4% of the part £20.00 to £300.00, 2% of the part £300.00 to £4,000.00. The seller receives the full item price. Bids and offers already include the fee.
Do buyers get the Buyer Protection fee back on a refund?
Yes. A full refund gives the buyer the whole fee back. A partial refund gives back the same share of the fee.
Does eBay charge fees on postage?
For business sellers, yes: the final value fee and the regulatory operating fee are charged on the total sale, which includes postage. For private sellers, the Buyer Protection fee is worked out on the item price only, not the postage.
How much does it cost to promote an eBay listing?
With Promoted Listings General you choose the ad rate. eBay charges that percentage of the total sale, including postage, when the item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad. Business sellers pay VAT on top.
Does eBay take 10% of every sale?
No. Private sellers in the UK pay 0%. Business sellers pay between 5% and 14.9% of the total sale depending on the category, plus the per-order fee and the regulatory operating fee.
